Struggling Bilbao back to winning ways in Granada

Athletic Bilbao held on for only their third win of the season when Aritz Aduriz scored twice in a 2-1 success at Granada in La Liga on Sunday.

Bilbao, Europa League and King's Cup finalists last season, have made a dreadful start to the latest campaign and Sunday's victory leaves them in 14th on 11 points from 10 matches.

Aduriz opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 12th minute in rain-lashed Granada and doubled the visitors' lead 15 minutes later with a low drive from just outside the area.

Youssef El Arabi pulled a goal back for Granada eight minutes after the break but they could not make some sustained pressure count and are second from bottom on eight points.

Espanyol have also made a poor start but managed a second win of the season by beating Real Sociedad 1-0 away with Diego Colotto scoring in the 77th minute.

Deportivo Coruna won 1-0 at home to Real Mallorca thanks to a Bruno Gama effort after 30 minutes and Osasuna stayed rooted to the bottom on five points when they had a player sent off and lost 1-0 at home to Real Valladolid.

German Patrick Ebert netted for Valladolid seven minutes from time after Osasuna had Ruben dismissed for a second yellow card in the 76th.

Levante can climb above Malaga into fourth with a win at Sevilla later on Sunday (2030 GMT) while their mid-table hosts will try to boost their bid to get into Europe again.

Mancini rues missed chances as Manchester City held

Manchester City's defence has stopped leaking goals but manager Roberto Mancini is now concerned about their ruthlessness at the other end after a frustrating 0-0 draw with West Ham United on Saturday.

The Premier League champions dominated possession after a slow start at Upton Park but were guilty of missing some gilt-edged chances as they wasted the opportunity to join Manchester United at the top of the table.

Mario Balotelli, Carlos Tevez and Gareth Barry all fluffed opportunities for City although the visitors were fortunate when West Ham's Kevin Nolan had a goal harshly ruled out.

City have now conceded just two goals in their last five Premier League fixtures having conceded seven in the five before that but they are nowhere near the free-scoring machine that took the league by storm in the early days of last season.

"When you have 65 percent of possession and four incredible chances you deserve to win," Mancini, whose side remain unbeaten in the league, told reporters.

"But I am happy for the performance because we played well. I'm unhappy that we missed these chances.

"I don't think it was a fair result. Not fair at all.

The Italian added: "We conceded a lot of goals when we started the season.

"We've improved our defence but we need to start to score like last year."

It was the first time since April that City failed to score in the league, despite Mancini starting with three strikers in Balotelli, Tevez and Edin Dzeko and throwing on Sergio Aguero from the bench late on in an attempt to seal victory.

"We continue to miss a lot of chances, every game," Mancini said. "It was the same against Swansea, we missed three or four chances in the second half and the same against Ajax.

"We created the chances and we played with three strikers. We tried everything to win but sometimes the game is like this. But, if we don't score, we don't win, this is football."

Adriano joins Barca's list of injured defenders

Barcelona's injury woes in defence took a turn for the worse on Saturday when fullback Adriano strained a leg muscle and was ruled out for around three weeks.

The Brazilian pulled up shortly before halftime during Barca's 3-1 La Liga win at home to Celta Vigo and had to be replaced by compatriot Daniel Alves.

Adriano, who scored Barca's opening goal at the Nou Camp, joins centre backs Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique on the sidelines and will be unavailable for Wednesday's Champions League match at Celtic.

"Adriano suffered a strain to the adductor muscle in his right leg and will be out for approximately three weeks," Barca said in a statement on their website

Ivanovic keeps Serbia in hunt for Fed Cup title

Ana Ivanovic beat Petra Kvitova 6-3 7-5 on Sunday to keep alive Serbia's hopes of winning their debut Fed Cup title.

World number eight Kvitova had been expected to hand defending champions Czech Republic an unbeatable 3-0 lead on Sunday but former French Open winner Ivanovic produced an inspired display to keep the tie alive.

The 24-year old Serb took the first point for Serbia with a forehand winner on her third match point.

"It is amazing to give hope to our team. Overall I am very happy, it was a very high quality match I played today," Ivanovic told reporters.

"I knew today I would be playing better and I started swinging from the beginning and worked well for me. (Kvitova) started swinging again (in the second set), getting few winners down the lines, but I managed to stay calm."

Lucie Safarova will take on Serbia's Jelena Jankovic in the second reverse singles.

The Czechs are hoping to complete a tennis double as the men's team take on Spain in the Davis Cup final later this month.

Neymar scores hat-trick, gets ovation from rival fans

Brazilian soccer player Neymar
Neymar scored a hat-trick to lead Santos to a 4-0 win at Cruzeiro in the Brazilian championship, where his performance earned him a standing ovation from the home supporters.

The 20-year-old took his tally to 12 goals in the competition even though he has missed a number of games due to international commitments including a three-week spell at the Olympic Games.

Neymar opened his account in the 11th minute of Saturday night's game by nonchalantly diverting a low cross into the net at the near post and slotted in another from near the penalty spot after sloppy Cruzeiro defending in the 35th.

He then turned provider, setting up the third for Felipe Anderson with a run down the right and low cross in the 52nd minute, and completed his hat-trick in by converting an easy chance set up by Ezequiel Miralles.

Santos are ninth in the table with 46 points from 33 games, three ahead of Cruzeiro.

"I'm overcome, it makes me want to cry," Neymar told reporters after Cruzeiro fans, who had initially booed their own team, chanted his name and applauded him off the pitch.

Ten-man Gremio scored in the last minute to beat Ponte Preta 1-0 and stay third with 63 points, nine behind leaders Fluminense.

Gremio had Julio Cesar sent off midway through the second half but Vanderlei Luxemburgo's team took the points when Andre Lima headed in from corner.

Villa shines as Barca go three clear at the top

Barcelona pulled three points clear of Atletico Madrid at the top of La Liga when David Villa scored and created a goal for Jordi Alba in a 3-1 win at home to promoted Celta Vigo on Saturday.

Celta have not won at the Nou Camp for 70 years but surprised their illustrious hosts with some neat play and Mario Bermejo levelled at 1-1 three minutes after Adriano's 21st-minute opener.

Villa, who looks to be getting back to his best after a lengthy recuperation from a broken leg, put Barca back in front two minutes after Bermejo's strike.

He sent Andres Iniesta clear with a deft flick and raced into the area to sidefoot his Spain's team mate's low cross into the net for his fifth league goal of the season.

The 30-year-old then produced another delightful back heel to put Alba through in the 61st minute and the referee allowed the fullback's neat finish to stand despite the fact he was clearly offside when Villa made the pass.

Barcelona's World Player of the Year Lionel Messi, who became a father for the first time when his son Thiago was born on Friday, had a quiet night, the La Liga top scorer failing to add to his 13 league goals this term.

Atletico, like Barca unbeaten in all competitions, can join the Catalan club on 28 points with a win at Valencia later on Saturday (2100 GMT).

Third-placed Malaga suffered a first defeat of the campaign when they were beaten 2-1 at home by Rayo Vallecano.

Rayo forward Piti netted twice for the visitors either side of a Martin Demichelis header as Malaga slipped up ahead of their Champions League Group C match at AC Milan on Tuesday.

Champions Real Madrid, whose title defence got off to a shaky start but who have since clawed their way up to fourth, host Real Zaragoza in Saturday's other fixture (1900).

Jose Mourinho's side will leapfrog Malaga, who have 18 points from 10 matches, into third if they avoid defeat at the Bernabeu.

Barca's Pique returns from injury for Celtic trip

Barcelona's Gerard Pique
Centre back Gerard Pique has returned to the Barcelona squad after injury and is fit for Wednesday's trip to Celtic in Champions League Group G.

"Happy to train with the team again. It felt really good!" Pique said on his official Twitter account on Monday.

The Spain international has been out of action with a foot injury since Barca's 3-2 win over Spartak Moscow seven weeks ago and his replacements have struggled at times.

He was named in Tito Vilanova's squad for the clash at the Scottish champions but Adriano Correia and Carles Puyol are out injured, while Sergio Busquets is suspended.

Group leaders Barca are five points above second-placed Celtic after three wins out of three and are close to securing last 16 qualification.
